The vegetation in the sea bed has obviously grown from the species from the Mediterranean coast.
One of the most peculiar features of the Mar Menor is the vegetation on the soft surfaces, silt and sand. Most of them are covered by layers of green algae which have adapted to marine life. There are no other lagoons with such important layers formed by these species.
The fine shells at the bottom of the lagoon created large masses of vegetation but also lead to the existence of a type of species that are peculiar and typical in this area. The most popular species is the Penai Kerathurus tiger prawn, typical in the sandy beds in La Manga and a highly valued species from a commercial point of view.
