Few are the festivities that manage to gather so many people from different parts of the country as the day of the Virgen de la Asunción, held on August 15th, with its nautical-terrestrial procession.
From early hours of the day thousands of people pour into the maritime town of Los Alcázares to greet and accompany the float of the beloved patron, made by sculptor José Sánchez Lozano from Murcia, a member of the Salzillo school.
This festivity begins early with the musical “awakening”, as an invitation for all neighbours to join this religious event.
After making the floral offering at the church, the procession continues along the maritime promenade of Los Alcázares, and will make its traditional stop at the hotel-spa La Encarnación. As the procession reaches the air base, the symbolic homage paid by the Air Force takes place before the sacred image.
Here begins the maritime route along the entire coast of Los Alcázares, where the Virgin is transported by veteran sailors and is accompanied by over 50 ships that greet it with chants, hurrahs and continuous fireworks.
At the return to the Parish Church, the patron is dedicated a nautical “Salve” which ends this indeed emotive and memorable day.
